New IDN set offers domain name holders consistent branding
Friday, 28 November 2003The registries for domain names in Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria have announced the introduction of a new set of IDN (Internationalised Domain Name) standards.
The new IDN standards will enable the registries DENIC, nic.at and SWITCH, to offer domain names containing any of the 92 additional characters on offer, for example the French é or the Danish ø.
The three registries are now planning to act in unison in further multiplying the orthographic possibilities for domains.
The new characters are being introduced in response to pressure from the registries clients, and eliminating restrictions on languages in domain names appears to be becoming an increasing priority for Internet businesses looking to offer location-specific services.
To date, any party wishing to register a domain has been restricted to the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, the digits 0-9 and hyphens.
The extension of this catalogue looks set to offer domain name holders a far wider set of options as they look to maintain their cultural identity and achieve consistent branding both on and offline.
The characters introduced with the new IDNs will be available for registration as of March 1st 2004
