False registration invoices target trademark owners
Friday, 21 November 2003Trademark owners are being advised to exercise caution over a spate of misleading invoices requesting the payment of a supposed trademark registration fee.
It has been reported that both lawyers and officials from the Trade Mark Registry have received a substantial number of inquiries from companies regarding the invoices.
Each invoice leads with the heading: Registration in the EIEC Register of Protected Trademarks, and requests the payment of £479.75, according to reports. The invoices pertain to be from the European Institute for Economy and Commerce.
Mark Pearce, head of intellectual property at Dickinson Dees described the situation as extremely concerning, according to the Financial Times:
Its important that trademark applicants understand that they dont owe these people a penny, he said.
The Trade Mark Registry has issued formal warnings against the misleading requests on its website and has highlighted EIEC in the matter.
