Internet governance to feature at WSIS

Friday, 21 November 2003
The issue of Internet governance is to be a main point of focus at the upcoming World Summit on Information (WSIS) to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, next month.

A number of nations are reaffirming support of proposals to bring the Internet under an international ruling body such as the UN, despite continued support of ICANN from the US and European Union.

Addressing a media conference this week South African president Thabo Mbeki stressed the need for discussion on the matter:

‘We need to discuss the possibility of putting in place a multilateral mechanism for Internet governance and the summit is a good place to do it,’ he said, according to ITWeb.

‘It may be the current way it is governed through ICANN is the best way, but this has to be examined,’ he added.

It has been rumoured that a number of poorer countries may consolidate efforts in joint action in an attempt to persuade other nations to agree to their demands.
