ICANN reviews net domain options
Friday, 14 November 2003The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICAAN) has announced a review of its methods of selecting and implementing top-level domains (TLDs).
The new initiative was proposed at the organisations annual meeting in Tunisia, with the intention of ascertaining how new TLDs should take place alongside common existing ones such .com and .org.
ICANN has stressed that the review is working towards promoting competition and choice in TLDs, an aim officials are hoping will be met with the help of Internet service operators and users.
Paul Twomey, ICANN president and chief executive, said: ICANN is working hard to listen and be responsive to the Internet community.
The Internet Architecture Board has been commissioned to assess technical standards affecting TLDs and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has been drafted to review potential risks to intellectual property created by new domains.
