ICANN criticised over .travel domain name delays
Thursday, 6 November 2003Travel industry officials have criticised the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) over delays in establishing .travel as a top level domain name.
It has been argued that ICANNs failure to implement the domain works against attempts to simplify navigation of the Internet for online shoppers.
Concerns have been raised by the Travel Partnership Corporation (TTPC), a non-profit organisation including representatives from travel industry bodies such as the World Travel and Tourism Council.
It has suggested that '.travel', unlike '.com,' '.org,' or '.net', would be restricted to legitimate providers of travel-related products, services or information, an important stage in the construction of a global online travel directory.
In a letter to ICANN chairman Vinton Cerf seen by Travelbiz, Travel Partnership chairman Jean-Claude Baumgarten described the delays as an insufferable impediment to travel and tourism e-commerce.
