Google may develop browser
Friday, 8 October 2004Search engine Google is rumoured to be planning to develop a web browser.
The Internet giant is rumoured to have registered a domain name, applied for a patent and hired a number of new staff.
The web browser would be likely to incorporate Google search, Gmail free email, Google's Blogger web publishing software and pop-up blocking technology.
A US newspaper reported that Google has poached four former Microsoft workers who created early versions of the Internet Explorer browser and the new Longhorn operating system. Google also registered the domain name "gbrowser.com on April 26th.
The search firm recently played host to the Mozilla Developer Day at its Mountain View, California, campus. Analysts have suggested that Mozilla, which operates its own browser, called Firefox, could contribute code to a Google browser.
Google is also rumoured to be working on an instant messaging application, a file storage system, and a thin-client operating system. The company has denied that it is planning to launch a web browser and a spokeswoman said that the company had a policy of not commenting on rumour and speculation.
