Chinese firm registers ‘Happy Birthday’ as trademark
Friday, 22 October 2004A private Chinese company claims it has registered the words ‘Happy Birthday’ as its trademark in 25 countries.
The Fufeng toy plant in Anhui Province said it has more than 70 products with the ‘Happy Birthday’ brand, including toys, dresses, shoes and hats.
The toy maker, whish has an estimated annual export value of more than $5 million, has now registered ‘Happy Birthday’ in 25 countries, including the US, Japan and European Union member states.
According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, the firm realised the importance of branding in the increasingly competitive world toy market and was inspired to register the “well-known and pleasant phrase ‘Happy Birthday’.”
