STAR-ROUND-UP AT THE WIPO
Friday, 27 October 2000The World Intellectual Property Organization may be quick with its rulings in domain name disputes, but the guilty parties are sometimes extremely tardy in handing over the names to the rightful owners.
Take Julia Roberts for example. The WIPO ruled in favor of the American actress concerning the name juliaroberts.com months ago, but she's yet to take control of her name.
Madonna however, had better luck. She gained control of her name only days after the WIPO had ruled in her favor against a man using the site for adult entertainment.
Both Roberts and Madonna did however win the suits, which is more than what could be said about the British musician Sting. Because the name is a common English word and not his proper name, Sting cannot expect trade mark protection in cyberspace. (Computer Sweden, 24)
