.tel - who, what and why
On May 30th 2006 ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) awarded .tel top level domain management to its registry operator and sponsoring organization Telnic. Telnic is a limited liability company incorporated in England.
.tel is a new generic TLD driven application for corporations and individuals to provide all relevant contact information in one convenient always accessible location.
.tel is fundamentally different from all other Top Level Domains (TLDs). The purpose for .tel is communication, not just the usual website content. The .tel application maps domain names to contact information and keywords stored directly in the DNS.
Launch phases
The phases and dates are outlined below:
- Landrush
Landrush will begin on February 3, 2009. During landrush, domains will be offered for a 3-year term on a first-come, first-served basis.
- General Availability
Beginning March 24, 2009, .tel will be available to everyone on a first-come, first-served basis.
